buskers...esquires...viaduct

Happened to be in the city yesterday afternoon and caught some awesome performance of 2 British guys doing some acrobats just outside the downtown shopping centre involving various forms of supporting each other in all kinds of awkward positions lol. Has anyone seen it? it was particularly impressive how they preserved their British identity so wonderfully...complete with the pipe, a black hat, and of course the black umbrella. The extra feature of the performance being one of them acting dumb, lol, initially i thought he was from a non-english speaking country. But he has such an innocent smile.
It was also interesting patronising for the first time the esquires on Albert street (across the road from kbox). while we were having some interesting time playing truth or dare in the shop, the owner kept eyeing us suspiciously, which i can't blame, after such dares as beating chest like king kong, and kissing the woman in the picture on the wall. But somehow i also kept wondering if the shop owner himself was someone suspicious. He's pretty middle-eastern, plus, why else would he be so suspicious of other ppl?
all this culminated in the dinner at viaduct, judging from the price of the dishes, they must be pretty good quality. As i say 'they say mum's cooking is the best, but i think my own cooking is the best, coz i put so much effort into it'. to be fair the food was delicious, including pork & some sort of fish (i tend to remember the tastes of dishes better than their names). i find that specialties of specialty restaurants tend to be their sauces (this certainly reminds me of daikoku), lol.
out of my generosity as i was in a happy mood, i decided to give a free performance of Jack's dance just on the balcony area outside the Hilton Hotel. Needless to say we attracted a 'considerably curious' crowd. Everything went as expected ;P.

chinese new year speech

firstly a big HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR to everyone, and welcome myself back to my blog. as i have commented to a friend, i am a person who's often very lazy with the pen or keyboard, and since the world hasn't lost anything from such actions, i have ample excuse to continue my vegetating existence.
thank you all for the support of the past year, those who use msn and those who don't. It wouldn't be too big an exaggeration to say i might well have died otherwise (not including the car accident i was in just yesterday). i would especially like to say thank you to wingchi, who's been very understanding in my moody times and made many a very memorable time for me.
to all my medical friends, thank you for working together to pull through arguably the most difficult year of the degree. Let's make sure we all take different specialties in the future, so we can all help each other out throughout our lives.
and thank you to my engineering (my second faculty in the university) frds and beyond (law, arts..). You have all helped to make the year a much less stressful year than it could have been. Not to mention i can sing k now much more confidently (tho perhaps not more skilfully) now.
thank you to my friends, old and new, who aren't sort of covered above, Felix, William, John, Andrewx2, Jeremy, Shyam, Alf, David, Eddie, JC, Jen, Youna and others i won't mention specifically, i am sincerely glad and honoured to be your friend. I have learnt a lot from each of you.
and thank you to anyone else reading this blog. haha, unlike most blogs, i understand that this one doesn't have colourful pictures (i am yet to invest in a digital camera), and even the blogs themselves can be awkward to read. Without its readers, this blog will lose its meaning. your support is at the very centre of my msn blog page.
as for what u can expect of me this year? well hopefully i'll be a little more knowledgeable medically speaking, and be able to answer more of anyone's health questions, although i still won't accept any legal responsibilities. i will probably do some more work in terms of music, both trying to make sure my piano skills are not slipping, as well as learning to do some harmonisation/accompaniment work, perhaps with composition as a final (and distant) goal. I still have the paper on which i composed my first string quartet & piano trio on (lol only a few bars), perhaps i can carry on to finish them some time, hehe. i have become a great fan of badminton, through my last year's membership in the Lloyd Elsmore Club, i'd be glad to try out my skills with anyone.
anywayz,

best wishes to you all
Richard :)

stats?

some time ago, we had a lecture which gave China a championship: the highest average number of sex partners of all countries in the world, at 19.3. jokes about it aside ('China comes first at everything'), i found that quite incredulous, since most people are actually faithful to their partner research has found. But an article elucidates the finding:
consider a sex worker. She (or he -- won't be sexist) in 1 month, we can suppose, will receive 10 clients (a conservative estimate). Then in 1 year s/he receives 120 clients.
let's say that the average working duration of a sex worker is 4 years. then s/he will have received 500 clients during her/his career.
if 1 out of every 25 ppl is a sex worker, then even if the other 24 completely abstain, the average number of sex partners would be 20.
But we also remember that there needs to be (at least) 2 ppl in a sexual act, thus we can say that if 1 out of every 50 ppl is a sex worker, then even if all the others abstain, the average number of sex partners is 20.
putting the proportion of sex workers of the whole population in China at 2% is considered a reasonable estimate (apparently, according to the article, it's easier to see a sex worker on the street than buying a packet of cigarette)
thus QED...the value given at the top is understandable.
i must point out though, the author of this article seems to disregard the fact that some of those clients may have been repeat clients. i guess that should not be a huge confounder.
sobering thought that the figure could be true after all...(but doesn't it seem like the study is a bit biased putting China at the top...Chinese men don't have the greatest libido in the world...go ask the women...)

tutoring

tutoring can be stressful at times...especially when u haven't touched a subject for 2 years and are then expected to tutor it (ie answer any weird schol level questions). It's like taking an exam without revision, plus you'd immediately look stupid if u can't solve it. avoid if possible...

some scientific findings

firstly offering a personal statement of regret to whoever thought i was being rude to our female friends...that was not the intended meaning...and not being sensitive enough to the sensitivity of girls, i did not choose something PC to put on my blog. will learn from that...thx :)
the following is some hard scientific research findings, i hope no one will object to it, and i can make it very clear this applies to both sexes equally.
research result from Italy shows that during the 'honeymoon' period of a relationship (the first 6 months that is), the secretion of male sex hormones in the male partner decreases, while secretion from the female partner increases. Thus in this period, we can say that the guy becomes more unlike a guy, and the girl becomes more like a guy. And apparently this leads the two lovers to feel that they have less differences between themselves, and have a stronger connection than reality.
another research from London University show that during this same period, the brarin secretes certain chemicals that suppresses the part of the brain that controls our evaluation of other people, so that we become oblivious to the shortcomings of our other half. After this period, when the secretions of the brain returns to normal, we become once again alert the fact that we have chosen the wrong partner.
it seems like what all this is telling us is that it is impossible for lovers to remain immersed in each other for long. on the other hand it seems like the day that these chemicals can be isolated and made into drug form, perhaps there is finally something better than alcohol that can make us like others (of the opposite sex) better...

disclaimer to the previous

to all who were offended:
the previous entry was purely fictional and for the purpose of entertainment. Any resemblance to any person, male or female, in real life, is purely coincidental.

acknowledged hereby by the author

PS if you were offended because you didn't find it funny, then i would accept responsibility and apologise.

some advice on finding YOUR girl...

Uni is the place to go if you are feeling lonely...but avoid girls from the following deparments to go out with:
computer science -- just look at how quickly computers become outdated
physics -- only they know how to turn a toilet bowl into an electric chair
biological sciences -- they would sensually gaze at your 200 odd bones and 600 muscles
fine arts -- they would imagine you as a nude model
chemistry -- be careful of sulfuric acid disfiguring your face when you break up
english -- a group who read mills and boon all day
law -- you'll be on the losing side when dividing up the common properties
history -- can you trust someone who studies schemings & trickeries all day long?
mathematics -- calculate all the time, sure to become idiots one day
management -- don't touch them if you don't want to become a house servant
medicine -- she'd always see bugs all over your body (and inside)
economics -- she'll squeeze every last cent out of you
sports science -- beware of physical injuries
performing arts -- you wouldn't know you are living a real life or acting along

now the choices seem a bit more narrow...hopefully that helped you to make your choice ;)

rainbow's end + zoo = great day :)

isn't it sad that of all my 8 and a half years in NZ, it's been the first time i went to rainbow's end...
didn't get to see any rainbow tho...fake or real...i don't know if i should be thankful that it didn't rain or not.
in spirit it seems quite like disney land...but being essentially a NZ creation instead of an American one, it's not surprising that we NZers are more down to earth and designed something that you can actually finish in one day.
most rides are fun, especially if you body and mind are the slow aging type...hehe. the most memorable things are:
1. going on the 'octupus thing'. it can actually be scary when u face right down at the ground at 10 storeys above the ground. but being a guy...it is not acceptable to show fear (you guys will understand this)...so in this situation it's best to put on a poker face (as observed by joanne) or focus on the buddha (according to bowen).
2. bumper carts. haven't assessed how the frequent impacts have impacted on my brain function...but they have certainly affected bob's eye function...very unfortunate of him to have his glasses crushed to pieces under the the carts...the scene was quite
3. going on the bumper boat. i was told beforehand i've got to be careful not to make it go in circles, but i was surprised when my boat would hardly move. then i noticed a handle beside the tank...which was the accelerator (functions like the accelerator on a car)...this being after the bumper cart..i was convinced of the adverse effects of bumper carting on brain function.
4. the strange observation that it's colder standing the platform waiting for the rollercoaster than actually riding on it and have wind blowing at much faster velocity...once again it's probably related to fear...either heat production due to shivering or the fear receptors in the brain (if there's such thing...material for the next Nobel prize perhaps...) in overdrive suppression of the cold receptors.
5. the greatest memory of them all...the hotdog. i have to say...in this respect rainbow's end really outshone Disneyland, and i'm a firm believer of ' 民以食為天'. i have to say i was greatly impressed when the hotdog turned out to be about twice the size i expected. It reminds me of the pathetic waffle (altho in a cute Mickey Mouse shape) at Tokyo Disney...that was just not funny in comparison. it genuinely filled up my stomach such that i didn't even need dinner (also thx to joanne's nice nice NICE cake...that was the BEST EVER cake i've had)

won't dwell on zoo and karaoke except perhaps to say i was not impressed by my lack of high notes...not even anywhere hear my highest record...might take some estrogens b4hand next time...dunno if that might help...

a great song

some interesting exchanges

back to blogging after a while. thanks to Richard's comment, willl take that to heart.
i'm sure ppl will agree that free weekend txting always give you the opportunity to have some conversations that otherwise perhaps you wouldn't have a privilege to..i myself have had a couple..
the first one goes like this:
it al started on a sunday evening...
'hey wata u doin leon' I thought ok got the wrong so i replied telling them that i'm richard not leon
but this person didn't care anyway...'ma bad wat r u up 2 enywaes'
strange spelling too..ok i thought it's all free texting anyway, why not see where this convo goes, so i said i'm playing badminton
reply 'aye wur u frm im like 4rm mangree'
despite being a bit scared inside, i decided to say i'm from otahuhu..just to see what the reaction would be
she was obviously not convinced 'so like wur abouts n otahuhu dd u gO ottahu college'
not wanting to alienate this nice stranger, i failed to say i went to king's, but not knowing anything about otahuhu either i said i'm from de la salle..in fact i used to take train there all the time...
the interrogation continues..'aye wat nash r u nd wn dd u finsh'
i decided to be honest this time, i'm Chinese and left couple of years ago
she thought she was too smart 'wata liar wat asian wuld name ther sun richard'
haha i was laughing at this stage... i've lied to you a few times, but haha just when you think you're too smart, i AM speaking the truth...so i had to patiently explain that that is my english name, and i have a chinese name too which is jichuan
'r u being serious' obviously embarrassed she changed the topic 'Do u nO tony tuimaunga'
at this point i'm getting bored cos i don't see the convo going anywhere, and i have more interesting things to do..and also i'd rather let her continue believing that i really did go to De La Salle...so i terminated the convo

i thought that was the end of the matter...then the next week at the same time..i got something from the same number again 'iz dz richard' obvious she only wants to play the game when it is free too
i initially didn't realise n  thought was someone i knew, so i replied yes
'ay wata doin' hmm somehow this spelling seems familiar..so i asked: who is this?
'Ur frnd we wur txn lst wknd' hehe so i was right...i'm also impressed that she actually still remember my name..but this time i don't even wanna continue...

would never have thought that a couple of hours later i got this message 'hi leon wata u doin how hav u bin'
i was really happy i didn't reply earlier..thankfully that was the end of the story

the second one concerns a guy i met at work back in the summer holidays...he seemed like warm and chatty guy..was keeping telling me how sporty he is and is working as a psychiatric nurse. i thought hey here's another healthcare professional, perhaps i can learn something about the hospital from him too, so i agreed to exchange phone numbers, as he seemed interested in inviting me out.
had an txt exchange since then..apparently he's a swimming instructor now
don't know how he still remembers me...but he txted 'hey do u want to meet up and do something together? Brendon'
i politely replied that's ok with me
but he got a bit desperate 'tonight? i want to go to the hot pools. join me or just come around?'
i hesitated to think of how to reply..then he got impatient..couldn't even be bothered to wait for me to reply 'are you up to joining tonight. i would appreciate your company.'
now this is getting a bit dodgy...i said no i'm busy tonight but perhaps some time meet up in the city is ok
'when? what to do?' obviously he wants a definite answer
i hesitated again...he thought there's something wrong with message getting through or i'm mentally retarded
within 3 minutes 'so what is your suggestion?'
i was really uncomfortable now...this is not the same person as when i met him. anyhow i said i don't know yet, but when i get the chance, i'll tell him.
you can tell he had much reservation about my answer 'mate, if a stay-over helps your parents to feel more relaxed than being on he road late at night, then that can be arranged. alternatively we can meet before 14:30'
well i don't think that would put my parents more at ease at all...and what is he talking about anyway? before 14:30? the time was 19:30...i just refused to reply, and wasn't pestered again
so boys and girls, it's a big world out there. take care
quote of the day: 'i am free of all prejudices. i hate everyone equally.'

back...7 hours later

have u ever felt that there are so many things (i shud just say distractions) u want to do while you know you shud be swotting hard for exams, but you lose the interest to do them when the exams are actually over and you have plenty of time to do whatever you wanted? i guess blogging is one of these things...

anyway i've been doing my background reading of webpages for study (of course...) and this is what came up:

Penicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. The name "penicillin" can either refer to several variants of penicillin available, or to the group of antibiotics derived from the penicillins.

Penicillin has a molecular formula R-C9H11N2O4S, where R is a variable side chain.

Mode of action

Main article: beta-lactam antibiotic

Lukas is gay and no one likes him because he sticks pencil at other people really hard and it does hurt. People just hang around him because we want him to feel like he has an important but really he doesnt, he is just gay. By: Janny Bombay from Bombay Amazon

it'd be funny if we can all just vandalise any webpage we like...hehe (afterall this was a respectable pharmacology website)

how can you be good?

wish everyone who's in a relationship 在relationship中天天進步

have listened to so many songs...the majority laments about how the partner is a traitor, how heartless and cruel that they just decided to embrace someone else in their 懷抱

i'm sure some ppl do have the 花花公子gene in their genome, but then more than half the time a relationship doesn't work out surely has to do with the couple not being able to understand each other and compromise

the first time i've seen a song where the blame is not laid upon the partner...recommend it to anyone who wanna apologise to their partner for something they've done wrong (but feels too embarrassed) or just to show some good will to improve the relationship (it's always helpful to apologise first ;P):

last lecture

talking about PI's not having a western sense of time...that's exactly what the lecturer did himself...i suppose it kinda justifies the huge fees we have to pay...giving us some extra lecture time

noticed i forgot the traditn of the 'quote of the day'...oh well...

addendum

just thought it was funny seeing this email address:

dpat094@ec.auckland.ac.nz

(the reason is that dpat is what we call this course we're having: disease processes and therapeutic principles...ie pathology and pharmacology...don't know why they have to substitute a simple and clear title like that with a bit of a mouthful)

on this note, i'm reminded of one of our pharmacology lecturers, nick holford. he is a bit of an issue, in a funny-stupid way. comments like 'you should except to get different marks for similar answers cos there's random error...do you know how long it too me too mark all those papers? took me ******* 2 whole days.' and 'you should go learn some English...i don't speak Chinese' are not the nicest things that a lecturer can say to keen aspiring students (yeah well at least we claim and pretend to be). way to go...on that note we must thank Dr Finlay from the pathology department for his patience and friendliness he always shows to students ^_^.

blogging for the second time in the same day...don't know if it will bring me bad luck...but it does mean i should go...

28th of May 2005...of course...duh

was one of the most memorable days of all time (for me anyway)

the birthday party rocked (doubly so becaused of rock-climbing), and it's you guys who came along that made it so special....the baritone solo by jeremy...the 'cruel trick' bowen played on me...wingchi's cake that fell to bits when i tried to cut it (not that i'm trying to blame the innocent cake)...and the prezzies...the aesthetical, the profane, the 'hint-hint', the sweet (literally), the sweet (metaphorically), the educational, the emotional, the humorous...must bow 3 times to all who made it (and those who couldn't manage to...thank you for your interest too)

thought lunch was delicious, and there was a really good variety...there were some problems with overcrowdedness, i putting my waste in the wrong plate, and complaints of ice-cream not tasting like ice-cream, and worst of all, the restaurant ripping us off ($1 extra)...sorry guys...it's not my fault...it's the greedy capitalist owner...while at the same time making the staff work like slaves.

rock climbing (sheduled after lunch to burn all the lunch calories off ;) ) proved to be a little bit of a challenge personally...although i managed for the first time in my life to climb to the top of the wall (and it's not the kids' 2.5 metre high wall that i'm talking about) saw this amazing pro dude tho..wala...with his flexibility and strength, i think he'd make a good thief :P (not meaning to be disrespectful)

b4 lunch not much...arcade pool, the engineers, despite their more profound knowledge of the law of reflection, was aced by the med's, twice in a row (ok MAYBE sample size is still too small)

will take my time to finely appreciate all the presents and cards ^_^ i hope everyone enjoyed the day too.

2008

a new year...& a new start!
2007 was not an easy year, but glad that i had the courage to try new things, get out of my comfort zone, challenge myself. Thanks to all those who supported me through 2007 and into 2008. A very belated happy new (both Western & Chinese) new year :)

Some time ago i was looking up the lyrics to some songs, and i found a 'new' version of 七里香. It made me think of those (unlucky) 3rd years last year who just didn't happen to cheat smartly and got caught in such a publicised scandal the scale of which med school has never seen :P

I tried singing it to the tune, very amusing if not quite as rhyming as the original...

first time in a long time...

Don't even remember how long i haven't blogged on here...and it looks like now that i'm finally back on it...it's gonna be a plagiarised entry :P. Nevertheless i felt it was so good when i read it that i had to 轉載 it. to keep things legal, i hereby reference the source as well ;) (http://blog.pixnet.net/yeswedo/post/8178304 ). Hope you will enjoy it too (apologies to those who can't read chinese...maybe, i hope, i can translate into English some time soon).

Mr. Wrong vs. Mr. Right

I miss you

他不是很高,但我需要保護的時候他會站起來;
他不是很帥,但專注看我的眼睛裡自然有一股神采;
他有時兇我,因為他在乎我的身體健康居家平安;

uniguide

coming up to another weekend...
just wanted to reminisce a little about last weekend -- uniguide camp. I have to say that was the best camping experience of my life. i have to rate it 15/10. Above all the ppl were great, it was great to see my friends there sharing the experience.
i think the most spoken word at the camp was MAFIA. lol, i never thought i would have such a great opportunity to enjoy this game again. I was truly amazed (and touched - to use an emotional word) by ppl's enthusiasm. The best part must be playing by torch light, lol, it certainly added to the atmosphere. I thought Jason & Jin were the best players lol. My apologies go to Helen, for making false accusations on thin grounds of evidence. I will be more careful in the future not to accuse the innocent, while letting true evils like bobo the baggins roam around (fortunately the mafia lost).
my best experience must be pretending that i was murdered by a 'mafia' and falling dead at sach's cabin door. She was so freaked out that she gave me a good bashing, but i'm sure my physical distress was nothing like the emotional distress i caused her, so i took it all with a deep sense of regret. sorry, sach.
on the other hand, my worst experience must be -- well another experience with another cabin. i was coming back from the toilets/bathrooms after a long night of mafia, and misestimating the number of steps i took to get back to my cabin, i got into the wrong cabin. the first things i noticed were that things were kinda arranged differently in the room, especially MY things. i thought 'ah, they were cleaning up, these ppl. i'll sort it out in the morning.' then i saw my sleeping bag kinda folded in a strange way, so i tried to open it up and get ready to sleep. but...lo and behold, there was a sound from the bag, a deep voice. it said 'who is it'. i was kinda glad that i didn't just climb straight into the bag. I scurried away, red faced (luckily lights off -- no one can see), and awkwardly apologising. the only comforting thing is that apparently there was someone else who was following me into the wrong room, for there were 2 ppl (by a reliable eyewitness account) who came in and out of the room quickly and furtively. But i was in such a confused state of mind that i of course didn't notice myself.
I am very glad that i wrote this piece as a personal 'memoirs of a camp' and i'd like to share with all of you who came and couldn't make it. perhaps we can all do something to commemorate such an experience of a lifetime, right? :)

music

as some of u may know, i am an AVID karaoke fan (i wish there was supersize-capital). And as such, i would like to introduce a singer to those of you who may not have been aware. her name is cyndi (王心淩), and have released her first album in 2003. interestingly enough she collaborates a lot with jj (林俊傑) another singer i highly respect, as well as being a MASTER composer. i have a feeling she might just overtake jolin (蔡依林) one day. she certainly seems like a hard worker, but also maintains some modesty, which is especially valuable as a celebrity. anyhow, i hereby recommend two songs from her latest album "Cyndi with U". one is called 手錶 (watch), and the other 'you are my only love'. very sweet songs.

Repeat ,,

You are my only love

You are my only love

Repeat ,,,

You are my only love only love

unifriend opinion

I'd like to hereby introduce Bowen's very original site:
www.unifriend.co.nz (although www.unifriend.org seems to work just great for me too)
if u don't already know, this site is designed for the use of all NZ uni students. i very much encourage u to have a surf n sign up (and personally connect with me -- as this is important to me :)). It's a great site covering a wide range of topics revelant to most uni students including personal ads (post ur own girls -- especially if u'd like to know the administrator (;P sorry Bowen)).
otherwise i will also advance a little bit of my own agenda. Or should i say an agenda since i am Chinese. i have posted the article on unifriend, but i would like to post it here too. I am admittedly a politics enthusiast, almost following Taiwanese politics every day (for its variety of gossipy topics such as fist fight in parliament). On the other hand i don't like publicly voicing my opinions on it very much, so as much as i am quoting this article, i don't want to say too much about it. What i like about it is it's professed objectivity.. after all what does a westerner know about China or Japan if Hollywood mistook 3 Chinese stars all for some kind of Japanese semi-prostitute, lol.

The row over Japan's past and future
William Horsley
By William Horsley
BBC News, Tokyo

Japan's decision to approve new school textbooks, criticised by some for glossing over the country's wartime record, have promoted demonstrations in several Chinese cities. But as William Horsley discovers the row between the two countries concerns the future as well as the past.

Yasukuni Shrine
Prime Minister Koizumi's visits to the shrine were criticised by China
The most striking thing about the Yasukuni Shrine is its massive and forbidding black "torii" gate.

A distinctive symbol of the Shinto religion, a gaunt silhouette beneath which, on a bright spring day, I watched men and women of all ages streaming in to pay their respects to ancestors, or to admire the enchanting display of cherry blossoms on the tree-lined avenue.

Each family group would pause, shut their eyes and pray in front of the open-plan wooden building where the souls of two-and-a-half-million Japanese war dead are enshrined.

Those war dead include Hideki Tojo, Japan's wartime prime minister who was later hanged with a dozen other top leaders as a war criminal.

Japan's present leader, Junichiro Koizumi has made regular visits to Yasukuni Shrine in spite of furious complaints from China, South Korea and other neighbouring countries that in doing so he was condoning Japan's aggressive war in the 1930s and 1940s.

And now, the news from China is bad, very bad.

Demonstrations

Chinese demonstrators burn a Japanese flag
Demonstrations over the text-books have extended to South Korea
Last weekend an angry crowd gathered in Beijing to throw stones at the Japanese embassy.

In other cities young people have attacked Japanese shops and businesses.

In Shanghai two Japanese students were badly beaten up in a restaurant.

Chinese leaders say Japan will not deserve a permanent seat on the UN Security Council until it faces up honestly to its wartime misdeeds.

An e-mail doing the rounds in China calls for a mass boycott of Japanese goods. "Send this on to other Chinese people", the message says, "and we won't need to go to war!"

History

This stream of invective against the Japanese is not new.

Some Asia watchers see it largely as a device by Chinese leaders to extract more Japanese aid or divert attention from their own failings.

It is alarmingly reminiscent of the age of the Communist Red Guards.

The Yasukuni Shrine remains a potent symbol of how the Japanese, intoxicated by fascism and coerced by military rule, once collectively lost their reason and were fed fantastic myths, of racial superiority and the Emperor's divinity
But on this trip to Japan I could not avoid the conclusion that a new mood of nationalism has also begun to take hold in this country which has been publicly devoted to peace and economic prosperity for so long.

One sign is the Japanese authorities' approval of several new school history textbooks written by known right-wing scholars.

One book which has angered the Chinese failed to make any assessment of the number of Chinese civilians killed in the infamous Rape of Nanjing.

The internationally accepted view is that hundreds of thousands died in an orgy of sexual violence and killing by Japanese troops.

And Japan's largest national newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun, in what I take to be blatant disregard for the known facts, has called on its readers to celebrate, because the new textbooks have cut out all mention of one of the greatest of all the humiliations inflicted by Imperial Japan on its neighbours: the use of large numbers of women in conquered Asian countries as sex slaves for the Japanese army.

It was right to set the record straight, I read, because the accusations "had been shown to be untrue".

Surely I thought modern Japan could not give in to the poison of such deceit and hypocrisy ever again.

The Yasukuni Shrine remains a potent symbol of how the Japanese, intoxicated by fascism and coerced by military rule, once collectively lost their reason and were fed fantastic myths, of racial superiority and the Emperor's divinity.

'Bitter dispute'

I had come to see the recently expanded Yasukuni museum of Japanese history.

For 100 years Japan has been number one in Asia. Now China, with 10 times Japan's population, is in a hurry to take over that role
I found that its 18 galleries of high-quality displays, maps and texts amount to a lavish and expensive re-write of the history of Japan's imperial age, to show the Japanese as innocent victims of a conspiracy by the Western colonial powers, to thwart Japan's ambition to lead East Asia and force Japan into war.

By this account annexing Korea, setting up a puppet regime in Manchukuo, the step by step takeover of China, each was done in self-defence, aiming only to bring peace.

As for Nanjing, I found no mention of Japanese soldiers killing civilians.

Instead, these words: "The Chinese were soundly defeated, suffering heavy casualties. Inside the city, residents were once again able to live their lives in peace."

However you look at it, that will not do as a record of what happened.

By chance I came across this testimony of a Japanese army veteran who was there.

"No matter how young or old, none of the women we rounded up could escape being raped. Each one was allocated to 15 or 20 soldiers for sexual intercourse and abuse."

Afterwards "we always stabbed them and killed them. Because dead bodies don't talk."

The bitter dispute now raging between Japan and China is both about setting the record straight and about a struggle for power.

For 100 years Japan has been number one in Asia.

Now China, with 10 times Japan's population, is in a hurry to take over that role.

And as with highly-geared racing cars sharing the same circuit, it is the moment of overtaking that brings the greatest risk of a crash.
